There is rising interest globally with respect to the health implications of vegetarian or plant-based diets. A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that higher consumption of plant-based foods and the nutrients found in vegetarian and plant-based diets are associated with numerous health benefits, including improved blood pressure, glycemic control, lipid levels, body mass index, and acid-base parameters. Furthermore, there has been increasing recognition that vegetarian and plant-based diets may have potential salutary benefits in preventing the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). While increasing evidence shows that vegetarian and plant-based diets have nephroprotective effects, there remains some degree of uncertainty about their nutritional adequacy and safety in CKD (with respect to protein-energy wasting, hyperkalemia, etc.). In this review, we focus on the potential roles of and existing data on the efficacy/effectiveness and safety of various vegetarian and plant-based diets in CKD, as well as their practical application in CKD management.

Distinct pedagogical approaches within medical curricula in France and in the U.S. reflect a growing recognition of the importance of nutrition to address major public health challenges. However, recent generations of medical students have expressed mixed opinions regarding nutrition education. What pedagogical approach may improve nutrition education? Despite different medical systems, students from both France and the U.S. share similar concerns and expectations, that nutrition knowledge must be embedded in the curriculum and must be engaging. Hands-on, system-based, epistemological, and multidisciplinary approaches need better articulation to forge a robust medical curriculum. In the rapidly changing contexts of medicine and public awareness, social science research may facilitate recommendations for improved nutrition education.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common non-communicable disease occurring globally. Although previous literature has provided useful insights into the important role that diet plays in CVD prevention and treatment, understanding the causal role of diets is a difficult task considering inherent and introduced weaknesses of observational (e.g. not properly addressing confounders and mediators) and experimental research designs (e.g. not appropriate or well designed). In this narrative review, we organised current evidence linking diet, as well as conventional and emerging physiological risk factors, with CVD risk, incidence and mortality in a series of diagrams. The diagrams presented can aid causal inference studies as they provide a visual representation of the types of studies underlying the associations between potential risk markers/factors for CVD. This may facilitate the selection of variables to be considered and the creation of analytical models. Evidence depicted in the diagrams was systematically collected from studies included in the British Nutrition Task Force report on diet and CVD and database searches, including Medline and Embase. Although several markers and disorders linked to conventional and emerging risk factors for CVD were identified, the causal link between many remains unknown. There is a need to address the multifactorial nature of CVD and the complex interplay between conventional and emerging risk factors with natural and built environments, while bringing the life course into the spotlight.

The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) is a federally funded grant program that provides nutrition incentives-subsidies for purchasing fruits and vegetables (FV)-to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants. GusNIP currently advances nutrition equity by improving FV access for people with low incomes, yet inequities exist within GusNIP. We sought to identify inequities in GusNIP at the community, organization, partner, and individual levels and develop recommendations for farm bill provisions to make the program more equitable. In Spring 2021, a group of nutrition incentive experts (n = 11) from across the country convened to discuss opportunities to enhance equity in GusNIP. The iterative recommendation development process included feedback from key stakeholders (n = 15) and focus group participants with GusNIP lived experience (n = 12). Eleven recommendations to advance equity in GusNIP in the farm bill emerged across six categories: (1) increase total GusNIP funding, (2) increase funding and support to lower-resourced organizations and impacted communities, (3) eliminate the match requirement, (4) support statewide expansion, (5) expand and diversify retailer participation, and (6) expand program marketing. Including these recommendations in the upcoming and future farm bills would equitably expand GusNIP for SNAP participants, program grantees, and communities across the country.

Purpose of reviewEmerging evidence supports the promise of precision nutritional approaches for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention. Here, we discuss current findings from precision nutrition trials and studies reporting substantial inter-individual variability in responses to diets and dietary components relevant to CVD outcomes. We highlight examples where early precision nutrition research already points to actionable intervention targets tailored to an individual's biology and lifestyle. Finally, we make the case for high-density lipoproteins (HDL) as a compelling next generation target for precision nutrition aimed at CVD prevention. HDL possesses complex structural features including diverse protein components, lipids, size distribution, extensive glycosylation, and interacts with the gut microbiome, all of which influence HDL's anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cholesterol efflux properties. Elucidating the nuances of HDL structure and function at an individual level may unlock personalized dietary and lifestyle strategies to optimize HDL-mediated atheroprotection and reduce CVD risk.Recent findingsRecent human studies have demonstrated that HDL particles are key players in the reduction of CVD risk. Our review highlights the role of HDL and the importance of personalized therapeutic approaches to improve their potential for reducing CVD risk. We emphasize that fractionating HDL into size-based subclasses and measuring particle concentration are necessary to understand HDL biology and for developing the next generation of diagnostics and biomarkers. These discoveries underscore the need to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to HDL management. Precision nutrition strategies that account for personalized metabolic, genetic, and lifestyle data hold promise for optimizing HDL therapies and function to mitigate CVD risk more potently. While human studies show HDL play a key role in reducing CVD risk, recent findings indicate that factors such as diet, genetics, glycosylation, and gut microbes modulate HDL function at the individual level, underscoring the need for precision nutrition strategies that account for personalized variability to optimize HDL's potential for mitigating CVD risk.

Achieving optimal health is an aspirational goal for the population, yet the definition of health remains unclear. The role of nutrition in health has evolved beyond correcting malnutrition and specific deficiencies and has begun to focus more on achieving and maintaining optimal health through nutrition. As such, the Council for Responsible Nutrition held its October 2022 Science in Session conference to advance this concept. Here, we summarize and discuss the findings of their Optimizing Health through Nutrition - Opportunities and Challenges workshop, including several gaps that need to be addressed to advance progress in the field. Defining and evaluating various indices of optimal health will require overcoming these key gaps. For example, there is a strong need to develop better biomarkers of nutrient status, including more accurate markers of food intake, as well as biomarkers of optimal health that account for maintaining resilience-the ability to recover from or respond to stressors without loss to physical and cognitive performance. In addition, there is a need to identify factors that drive individualized responses to nutrition, including genotype, metabotypes, and the gut microbiome, and to realize the opportunity of precision nutrition for optimal health. This review outlines hallmarks of resilience, provides current examples of nutritional factors to optimize cognitive and performance resilience, and gives an overview of various genetic, metabolic, and microbiome determinants of individualized responses.

Adequate nutrition is central to well-being and health and can enhance recovery during illness. Although it is well known that malnutrition, both undernutrition and overnutrition, poses an added challenge for patients with cancer diagnoses, it remains unclear when and how to intervene and if such nutritional interventions improve clinical outcomes. In July 2022, the National Institutes of Health convened a workshop to examine key questions, identify related knowledge gaps, and provide recommendations to advance understanding about the effects of nutritional interventions. Evidence presented at the workshop found substantial heterogeneity among published randomized clinical trials, with a majority rated as low quality and yielding mostly inconsistent results. Other research cited trials in limited populations that showed potential for nutritional interventions to reduce the adverse effects associated with malnutrition in people with cancer. After review of the relevant literature and expert presentations, an independent expert panel recommends baseline screening for malnutrition risk using a validated instrument following cancer diagnosis and repeated screening during and after treatment to monitor nutritional well-being. Those at risk of malnutrition should be referred to registered dietitians for more in-depth nutritional assessment and intervention. The panel emphasizes the need for further rigorous, well-defined nutritional intervention studies to evaluate the effects on symptoms and cancer-specific outcomes as well as effects of intentional weight loss before or during treatment in people with overweight or obesity. Finally, although data on intervention effectiveness are needed first, robust data collection during trials is recommended to assess cost-effectiveness and inform coverage and implementation decisions.

Spatial dynamics can promote persistence of strongly interacting predators and prey. Theory predicts that spatial predator-prey systems are prone to long transients, meaning that the dynamics leading to persistence or extinction manifest over hundreds of generations. Furthermore, the form and duration of transients may be altered by spatial network structure. Few empirical studies have examined the importance of transients in spatial food webs, especially in a network context, due to the difficulty in collecting the large scale and long-term data required. We examined predator-prey dynamics in protist microcosms using three experimental spatial structures: isolated, river-like dendritic networks and regular lattice networks. Densities and patterns of occupancy were followed for both predators and prey over a time scale that equates to >100 predator and >500 prey generations. We found that predators persisted in dendritic and lattice networks whereas they went extinct in the isolated treatment. The dynamics leading to predator persistence played out over long transients with three distinct phases. The transient phases showed differences between dendritic and lattice structures, as did underlying patterns of occupancy. Spatial dynamics differed among organisms in different trophic positions. Predators showed higher local persistence in more connected bottles while prey showed this in more spatially isolated ones. Predictions based on spatial patterns of connectivity derived from metapopulation theory explained predator occupancy, while prey occupancy was better explained by predator occupancy. Our results strongly support the hypothesized role of spatial dynamics in promoting persistence in food webs, but that the dynamics ultimately leading to persistence may occur with long transients which in turn may be influenced by spatial network structure and trophic interactions.

The idea that changing environmental conditions drive adaptive evolution is a pillar of evolutionary ecology. But, the opposite-that adaptive evolution alters ecological processes-has received far less attention yet is critical for eco-evolutionary dynamics. We assessed the ecological impact of divergent values in a key adaptive trait using 16 populations of the brown anole lizard (Anolis sagrei). Mirroring natural variation, we established islands with short- or long-limbed lizards at both low and high densities. We then monitored changes in lower trophic levels, finding that on islands with a high density of short-limbed lizards, web-spider densities decreased and plants grew more via an indirect positive effect, likely through an herbivore-mediated trophic cascade. Our experiment provides strong support for evolution-to-ecology connections in nature, likely closing an otherwise well-characterized eco-evolutionary feedback loop.

BACKGROUND: Pouchitis is the most frequent complication following restorative proctocolectomy and ileal pouch anal anastomosis (RP-IPAA) in patients with Ulcerative colitis (UC). Pediatric data on nutritional status during RP-IPAA and in patients with pouchitis are limited. AIMS: We aimed to delineate nutritional changes in children undergoing 2-stage and 3-stage surgeries and to evaluate the association between nutrition and the development of recurrent or chronic pouchitis. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study involved 46 children with UC who underwent a RP-IPAA. Data were collected at each surgical stage and for up to 2-year post-ileostomy takedown. We used Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test to evaluate the differences in nutritional markers across surgical stages and logistic regression to identify the factors associated with recurrent or chronic pouchitis. Post-HSCT clinical outcomes, including acute graft-vs-host disease (aGVHD), engraftment time, oral mucositis (OM), sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), and diarrhoea in relation to nutrition status after HSCT were analysed.Results: After HSCT, 28.21% experienced diminished nutritional status, with 71.43% of those who were wasting before HSCT showing diminished nutritional status, significantly higher than the normal group (18.75%, P = 0.012). Anthropometric changes included significant weight reduction (87.5%, 22.15 ± 7.46 vs 20.74 ± 6.57, P < 0.001) and BMI decrease (90%, 15.19 ± 1.70 vs 14.05 ± 1.48, P < 0.001). Body composition parameters, which are FFM, SMM, SLM, ICW, ECW, BCM, and PA (18.26 ± 5.71 vs 17.27 ± 5.19, 8.68 ± 3.30 vs 7.93 ± 3.02, 17.11 ± 5.28 vs 16.06 ± 4.84, 8.19 ± 2.54 vs 7.62 ± 2.31, 5.15 ± 1.58 vs 4.94 ± 1.47, 11.74 ± 3.63 vs 10.92 ± 3.32, 4.42 ± 0.50 vs 3.90 ± 0.57, respectively, P < 0.001) analysis revealed significant decreases. No significant differences in clinical outcomes were observed based on nutritional status.Conclusion: Paediatric β-TM patients undergoing HSCT exhibit significant changes in nutrition status and body composition, emphasizing the need for focused attention on malnourished children who are more prone to diminished nutritional status. Background Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is an effective treatment for hematopoietic malignancies. Malnutrition is a common complication and negatively affects prognosis. Muscle mass has been shown to reflect the nutritional status of patients earlier than blood biochemical parameters such as albumin. However, the influence of pre-transplantation skeletal muscle mass (SMM) on the complications associated with early transplantation remains unclear. Objective To investigate the effect of pre-transplant SMM on the early outcomes of allo-HSCT, provide a clinical basis for nutritional interventions and prognosis improvement. Methods A study was conducted with 77 leukemia patients who underwent allo-HSCT at the Medical Center of Hematology, Xinqiao Hospital of Army Medical University from January to October 2022. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to assess skeletal muscle mass. The patients were divided into the normal SMM group of 36 cases and low SMM group of 41 cases according to their SMM. Baseline data, including personal and clinical details, were collected. Early post-transplant complications (within 30 days post-transplant) such as oral mucositis, gastrointestinal symptoms, infection and hematopoietic reconstitution time between the two groups were compared using SPSS 23.0 software. Results There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain/gastritis incidence between the normal and low SMM groups (P>0.05). Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic gastrointestinal disease that causes anorexia, malabsorption, and increased energy requirements. Childhood IBD can significantly impact nutritional status and future health. Objective This study aimed to analyze the nutritional status of patients with pediatric IBD at presentation and during follow-up and to identify predictors of nutritional outcome. Methods This retrospective cohort study reviewed the medical records of children diagnosed with IBD in the Pediatric Department, Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain, 1984 − 2023. Demographic data, clinical characteristics, and anthropometric data were collected. World Health Organization growth standards were used to interpret nutritional status. Results Of the 165 patients, 99 (60%) had anthropometric data at presentation, and 130 (78.8%) had follow-up data. Most patients were males (64.6%) and had Crohn’s disease (CD) (56.2%), while 43.8% had ulcerative colitis (UC). The median age at presentation was 10.9 years and the mean follow-up duration was 12.6 years. At presentation, 53.5% of the patients were malnourished, that decreased to 46.9% on follow-up. Thinness was reduced from 27.3% at presentation to 12.1% at follow-up (p = 0.003). There was an increased tendency to normal weight on follow-up (59.6%) compared to time of presentation (46.5%), p = 0.035. Overweightness showed a non-significant increase from 26.3% at presentation to 28.3% at follow-up (p = 0.791). Abstract Background Malnutrition in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) is a significant global public health issue. Nutritional assessment combined with management or advice are essential to produce optimal outcomes. Objectives The objective of this study was to assess nutritional status and the sociodemographic profile of children with neurodevelopmental disorders in Bangladesh. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from December to April 2020 among the population of children with NDDs who presented to the pediatric department of the TMSS Medical College and Rafatullah Community Hospital in Bogura during this period. Socio-demographic data along with anthropometric measurements of the children were taken. Assessment of nutritional status were made using metrics such as z-scores for weight-for-age (WAZ), height-for-age (HAZ), and body mass index-for-age (BAZ). Descriptive statistics (number and percentage) and analytical statistics (chi-square and logistic regression) were included. Results 58.6% of children displayed malnutrition, with 47.8% showing undernutrition (WHZ / BAZ − 1 SD-≤-3 SD), and 10.8% overnutrition (BAZ > 2SD). Significant negative associations were found between malnutrition and parental education level, urban residency, and monthly family income. Children diagnosed with cerebral palsy exhibited twice the likelihood to be malnourished (AOR 2.39, 95% CI 0.83–6.87). Furthermore, residing in rural regions was associated with an increased risk of experiencing malnutrition, as indicated by an adjusted odds ratio of 1.60 (95% CI 0.12–3.09). Conclusions While the results are cross-sectional, over half of children with NDDs were found to be malnourished, suggesting that children with NDD in Bangladesh are vulnerable to developing any form of malnutrition. Therefore, regular assessments and timely nutritional support may improve their situation.

Background/purpose: Impaired masticatory performance results in nutritional deficiencies in older adults. This systematic review aims to investigate the following clinical question (CQ): Do occlusal supports impact nutritional intake or nutritional status in older individuals? Materials and methods: An extensive systematic literature search was performed to summarize the currently available knowledge to address the CQ. The cohort and intervention studies with participants of ≧60 years old or a mean age of 65 years performed before May 2021 were included. Studies were required to measure the parameters related to occluding tooth pairs/occlusal units and food/nutrient intake and/or nutritional status. Bias risk was assessed using the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Nonrandomized Studies. Results: After an independent screening of 1130 initial records, 24 reports from 22 studies were included. Participants (n = 8684) in the included studies were mainly residents of nursing homes or community-dwelling individuals. Following the assessment of bias risk, it is revealed that all studies had methodological weaknesses. Over half of the studies concluded that there was an association between occlusal support and nutritional intake or status. However, it was also revealed that various confounding factors are involved in the association between occlusal support and nutrition. Conclusion: This systematic review concludes that occlusal support might be associated with nutritional intake or nutritional status in the older population, although there are methodological limitations of each study. The evidence is still insufficient, and more well-designed studies are required.

INTRODUCTION: Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) has commonly been used for many years as an alternative nutritional status index in field settings, yet estimates of percentile range for healthy children and adolescents have not been documented in Nigeria. We construct reference curves for MUAC and its derived measures of upper arm muscle area (UAMA), upper arm fat area (UAFA) and present sex- and age-specific MUAC, UAMA and UAFA values for children and adolescents. METHODS: Natural cubic splines were fitted by maximum penalized likelihood to develop centile curves for MUAC, UAMA, and UAFA, and the LMS coefficients necessary to estimate the z-score specific to each age and gender were presented. MUAC, UAMA, and UAFA reference curves of US children and adolescents were used for comparison. RESULTS: The centiles of MUAC, UAMA and UAFA increased with age. However, these centile curves show significant sex-specific differences for boys and girls aged ≥ 10, ≥ 14.5 and ≥ 4.5 years of age, respectively. Compared to the US reference, the percentiles of MUAC, UAMA and MUAC are generally lower. CONCLUSION: In this study, we have presented a reference set of curves and tables for MUAC and its measures for healthy children and adolescents.

Background: Nutritional assessment on admission of critical patients is of vital importance to determine critical patients in whom there is a risk of malnutrition. Currently, it has been detected in most of the patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) that 60% of the daily calories are not achieved. Nurses play an essential role in the comprehensive assessment of the patient, including the nutritional area; however, significant deficits have been detected in some knowledge regarding Enteral Nutrition (EN). Objective: We aim to determine the level of knowledge of nurses in the nutritional assessment of critically ill patients. Methodology: A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted using the PRISMA statement. Between January 2017 and February 2023, articles were rescued from the electronic databases “Pubmed”, “Scopus” and “The Cochrane Library”, which analyzed the level of knowledge of ICU nurses regarding nutritional assessment. Results: Most of the results found showed that nurses had deficient levels of knowledge in relation to nutritional assessment and practices. Interventions related to nutritional assessment were scarce, in contrast to those associated with the management of Nasogastric Tube (NGT) or patient positioning. Conclusions: The level of knowledge described was low or inadequate in relation to the care associated with the nutritional assessment of critically ill patients. The use of scales to assess the risk of malnutrition was not reported. This study was prospectively registered at PROSPERO on 25/10/2023 (insert date) with registration number CRD: 42023426924.

Aim of investigation. To specify relation between trophological status, severity of relapse of ulcerative colitis (UC) and efficacy of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) for achievement of clinical remission.Summary. Nutritional status plays important role for body recovery at relapse of chronic diseases, including UC. At patients with nutritional failure remission achievement time becomes longer, bed-stay duration is increased. On the other hand, overweight patients often have more severe course of UC, as it affects important pathogenic processes. This article discusses possible links between trophological status and achievement of clinical remission, as well as between nutritional failure at UC and efficacy of mesalazine monotherapy.Conclusion. More severe course of UC, long bedstay, lower mesalazine efficacy are marked at patients with nutritional failure in comparison with those scores at patients with normal trophological status. At over-weight patients in comparison with patients with normal nutritional status no significant differences in specified parameters is observed.

Abstract Background Many developing countries, Namibia included, have a high prevalence of malnutrition among children, especially in rural subsistence farming areas where inadequate food supply is common. Poor diets in children under 5 years may result in negative health impacts. This study determined the association of food consumption patterns and nutritional status of children under 5 years from rural households in Oshana and Oshikoto regions in Namibia. Method Employing a cross-sectional descriptive design, 377 children under 5 years participated in this study using purposive sampling. Validated dietary diversity and food frequency questionnaires were used to obtain information on demographic characteristics, commonly consumed food per week, and meal frequencies for the recruited children. Anthropometric measurements were obtained to assess nutritional status of children using Emergency Nutrition Assessment (ENA) software. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using the IBM® SPSS® Statistics (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 27. Results Staple foods, mostly grains, roots and tubers, along with flesh foods, legumes and nuts were commonly consumed. Vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables were solely consumed in Oshana region (10.7%) and not in Oshikoto. Oshana exhibited a lower dietary diversity score (4±1 SD) compared to Oshikoto (5±1 SD). The prevalence of adequate feeding practices varied, with Oshana having 38.8% meeting minimum milk feeding frequency (MMFF), 55.6% minimum dietary diversity (MDD), 69.8% minimum meal frequency (MMF), and 27% minimum acceptable diet (MAD). In Oshikoto, these figures were lower at 2%, 7%, 32%, and 0.5%, respectively. Stunting, underweight, wasting, and overweight were also documented, with slight differences between the two regions. Abstract When pregnancy occur among teenagers; there is a competition for nutrients between the still-growing adolescent mother and her fetus. Pregnant adolescents’ nutrition issues are not addressed well and changes are too slow in Ethiopia. This study aimed to study, nutrition knowledge, nutritional status and associated factors among pregnant adolescents in West Arsi , central Ethiopia. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 426 pregnant adolescents between January 1 and January 25, 2023. Data were collected using kobo collect and analyzed using SPSS version 25. We performed linear regression to identify independent predictors of nutritional status and multivariable logistic regression analyses to identify nutritional knowledge. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals were estimated to show the strength of the association. Magnitude of good nutrition knowledge was 23.7%, 95% CI (21.4–25.3%), and the odds of having good nutrition knowledge was 7.5 times higher among participants whose education level was above college compared with illiterate participants [(AOR = 7.5, 95% CI = (5.27–9.38)],the odds of having good nutrition knowledge was 8 times higher among adolescent who had ANC visits, [(AOR = 8, 95% CI = (3.63–13.85)], and the odds of having good nutrition knowledge was 5 times higher among adolescents who received nutrition education [(AOR = 5, 95% CI = (3.67- 13.53)]. Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) combined with malnutrition results in decreased exercise capacity and a worse quality of life. We aimed to develop an observational case–control study to explore the effective and convenient method to identify potential individuals is lacking. This study included data from 251 patients with COPD and 85 participants in the control group. Parameters and body composition were compared between groups, and among patients with varied severity. The LASSO approach was employed to select the features for fitting a logistic model to predict the risk of malnutrition in patients with stable COPD. Patients with COPD exhibited significantly lower 6-min walk distance (6MWD), handgrip strength, fat-free mass index (FFMI), skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and protein. The significant predictors identified following LASSO selection included 6MWD, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), GOLD grades, the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score, and the prevalence of acute exacerbations. The risk score model yielded good accuracy (C-index, 0.866 [95% CI 0.824–0.909]) and calibration (Brier score = 0.150). After internal validation, the adjusted C-index and Brier score were 0.849, and 0.165, respectively. This model may provide primary physicians with a simple scoring system to identify malnourished patients with COPD and develop appropriate rehabilitation interventions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary and nutritional status, as well as the dietary structure, of TB patients in Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia, China. Additionally, the study aimed to analyze the factors that influence the nutritional status in order to provide a theoretical foundation for the prevention and treatment of TB and related issues.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 334 randomly selected TB patients from Hulunbuir City Second Hospital. A questionnaire survey was administered to collect information on demographic characteristics, dietary habits, and food intake. Nutritional status was assessed by body mass index (BMI). Dietary diversity score (DDS) was calculated based on the number of food groups consumed in the previous 24 hours. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0 software. Descriptive statistics employed rates and composition ratios, and categorical data was represented using frequencies and percentages. The chi-square test was used to analyze the association between nutritional status and other variables, with a significance level set at α=0.05. Multivariable ordinal logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the independent factors affecting the nutritional status of TB patients.Results: The univariate analysis revealed statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) in the nutritional status (as measured by BMI) among tuberculosis patients, considering ethnicity, educational level, smoking, meat-based diet, vegetable consumption, and DDS grading. No statistically significant differences were found regarding gender, age, marital status, occupation, sleep duration, alcohol consumption, and consumption of rice and flour dishes. Statistically significant variables from the univariate analysis were included in a multivariable ordinal logistic regression analysis model. The findings highlighted that educational level (high school or below), smoking, meat-based diet, DDS scores of 1– 3, and a primarily vegetable-based diet had independent effects on the nutritional status of tuberculosis patients (all P < 0.05). No significant difference was found in nutritional status between the Han ethnic group and other ethnicities.Conclusion: The study revealed that the dietary and nutritional status of TB patients in Hulunbuir City was suboptimal and influenced by several factors. Smoking, meat-based diet, and low dietary diversity score were the primary risk factors for malnutrition among TB patients. Abstract Background Globally, 144 million children under 5 years are undernourished and 250 million do not meet their developmental potential. Multi-input interventions, such as bundled nutrition and parenting interventions, are designed to mitigate risks for multiple child outcomes. There is limited evidence that bundled interventions have additive benefits to nutrition, growth, or development outcomes. These outcomes share common risks; therefore, designing interventions to tackle these risks using a common theory of change may optimize effectiveness. Emerging evidence suggests explicit engagement of fathers may benefit child outcomes, but few trials have tested this or included data collected from fathers. Methods Engaging Fathers for Effective Child Nutrition and Development in Tanzania (EFFECTS) is a community-based cluster-randomized controlled trial that will be implemented in the rural Mara Region, Tanzania. The trial aims (1) to test a bundled nutrition and parenting program delivered to mothers’ groups, with or without fathers’ groups, over 12 months on child and caregiving outcomes compared to a nutrition program alone, and (2) to test nutrition or bundled nutrition and parenting programs delivered to mothers’ and fathers’ groups over 12 months on child and caregiving outcomes compared to programs delivered to mothers alone. The trial comprises five arms: (1) mothers’ groups receiving a nutrition program, (2) mothers’ groups receiving a bundled nutrition and parenting program, (3) mothers’ and fathers’ groups receiving a nutrition program, (4) mothers’ and fathers’ groups receiving a bundled nutrition and parenting program, and (5) control receiving standard of care health services. The primary outcomes are child dietary diversity and early child development (mental and motor development). Parents with a child under 18 months will be enrolled in peer groups and receive twice monthly intervention by trained community health workers. Data will be collected from mothers, fathers, and children at baseline (pre-intervention), midline, and endline (post-intervention). Discussion EFFECTS will generate evidence on the effects of bundled nutrition and parenting interventions on child nutrition, growth, and development outcomes; determine the benefits of engaging fathers on child, caregiving, and caregiver outcomes; and investigate common and unique pathways between treatments and child outcomes. Abstract Background The single-pool model urea clearance index (single-pool Kt/Vurea; spKt/V) is the most commonly used method for dialysis adequacy assessment. However, only a few studies have examined the relationship between spKt/V values and parameters related to sarcopenia and nutritional status. This study aimed to evaluate whether the spKt/V is an indicator of sarcopenia and nutritional status in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). Methods A total of 142 patients were included in this single-center, cross-sectional study. Venous blood samples were collected shortly before the hemodialysis session. The adequacy of dialysis in patients receiving MHD was assessed using spKt/V. Sarcopenia was identified according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (2019) definition. Receiver operating characteristic curve and area under the curve were used to evaluate the predictive value of spKt/V in sarcopenia. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses were used to determine the association between spKt/V and sarcopenia and nutritional status. Results The mean spKt/V level was 1.3 ± 0.2, the prevalence of sarcopenia was 15.5% in patients on MHD. Abstract When pregnancy occurs in adolescence, the growth and development of the mother and fetus may be impaired due to strong competition for nutrients between the still-growing adolescent and the fetus. Pregnant adolescents constitute an underserved population; they lack adequate nutritional knowledge. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of nutritional behavior change communication (NBCC) through alliance for development (AFD) on the nutritional status and gestational weight gain (GWG) of pregnant adolescents. A two-arm parallel cluster randomized controlled community trial was conducted in the West Arsi Zone, central Ethiopia, from August 2022 to July 2023. The nutritional status of the pregnant adolescent was assessed using mid-upper arm circumference. Weight was measured at baseline and at the end of the intervention. A total of 207 and 219 pregnant adolescents participated in the intervention and control clusters, respectively. The intervention started before 16 weeks of gestation, and the intervention group attended four NBCC sessions. The NBCC was based on the health belief model (HBM) and was given at the participants’ homes with their husbands. The NBCC intervention was delivered by AFDs and community-level health actors. Pregnant adolescents in the control group received routine nutrition education from the health care system. A linear mixed-effects model and difference in difference (DID) were used to measure the intervention effect after adjusting for potential confounders. After the implementation of the trial, the mean mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) in the intervention arm significantly increased from baseline (p ≤ 0.001), 23.19 ± 2.1 to 25.06 ± 2.9 among intervention group and 23.49 ± 2.1 to 23.56 ± 2.0 among control group and the mean difference in the MUAC (DID) was 1.89 ± 2 cm (p ≤ 0.001); the mean GWG in the intervention arm significantly increased from baseline; 51.54 ± 4.7 to 60.98 ± 4.6 among intervention group and 52.86 ± 5.27 to 58 ± 5.3 among control group; the mean GWG in the intervention group was 9.4 kg, and that in the control group was 5.14 kg, and the difference in difference was 4.23 kg and this was statically significant p ≤ 0.001). This study demonstrated that the use of the HBM for NBCC delivered through the AFD was effective at improving the nutritional status and GWG of pregnant adolescents. These results imply the need for the design of model-based nutritional counseling guidelines. Abstract Background Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous group of connective tissue disorders, characterized by varying degrees of skeletal fragility. Patients experience a range of comorbidities, such as obesity, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal complications, especially in adulthood. All aspects that could benefit from dietary intervention. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 6-months restricted Mediterranean Diet (rMD) on nutritional status in adult patients affected by OI. Background: Patients with gastric cancer (GC) are at high risk of nutrient deficiencies (ND) that can negatively affect the postoperative period and long-term treatment outcomes.Objective: To assess the nutritional status (NS) and skeletal muscle condition in patients with resectable stage I-III GC.Materials and methods: Our study included 102 GC patients: 64 men (62.7%) and 38 women (37.3%) aged 31 to 77 years. During the assessment we used the NRS-2002 system, determined laboratory markers of the NS, calculated the Nutritional Risk Index (NRI), and evaluated the condition of adipose tissue and skeletal muscles using computed tomography.Results: We found that 70.6% of the patients had ND: NRS-2002 score < 3 points (52%) and NRS-2002 score ≥ 3 points (18.6%). Risk factors for ND were tumor localization in the cardia and stage III GC. Laboratory markers of ND were transferrin and NRI. Among the examined patients (n = 80) sarcopenia was detected in 10 (12.5%) patients: 1 patient (1/25; 4.0%) from the group without ND, 6 patients (6/42; 14.3%) from the group with NRS-2002 score < 3 points, and 3 patients (3/13; 23.1%) from the group with NRS2002 score ≥ 3 points, (P = .212). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, independent factors associated with sarcopenia were age, body mass index, and total protein.Conclusions: All GC patients selected for radical surgery should undergo nutritional assessment using special tools (NRS-2002, NRI) and evaluation of the skeletal muscle condition. Sarcopenia may occur in patients with no clinical or laboratory evidence of ND. In GC patients at nutritional risk, preand postoperative nutritional support should be considered to reduce the ND-related risks.

Background: Considering that nutritional status is one of the influential factors in the process of recovery of patients with COVID-19, this study was conducted to determine the nutritional status of COVID-19 patients and its relationship with clinical outcomes.Methods: This cross-sectional study included 155 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 disease (18-80 years) using PCR test and chest CT scan. The nutritional status of participants was assessed employing Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) questionnaire, Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, and Nutrition Risk in Critically(NUTRIC) score.Results: Among 81 men (52.3%) and 74 women (47.7%) based on MNA, 30 participants (19.4%) and based on GLIM criteria, 42 participants (27.1%) suffered from malnutrition. This article aims to verify the relationship between the composition and diversity of oral microbiota with overweight and obese children and adolescents. This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO, followed PRISMA 2020, and included an electronic search until March 2022, in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and The Cochrane Library databases. Studies were eligible if they compared the oral microbiota according to nutrition status among children and adolescents. Independent peers using JBI Critical Appraisal Checklists assessed the quality of studies. Eleven studies were eligible to be included in this review, with a total of 1,695 children and adolescents, 224 were obese, 190 were overweight, 1,154 were eutrophics and 127 were underweight. The most frequent phyla in overweight and obese children and adolescents, in comparison to their counterparts were Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Fusobacteria. It was identified that nine of the eleven articles selected showed an association between oral microbiota and overweight and obesity in children and adolescents. We observed that there is an important association between oral bacterial composition diversity and overweight and obesity. Oil palm is the main palm tree cultivated in the tropics, but little is understood about copper (cu) management in this crop. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of copper in oil palms plants in the Eastern Amazon. The experiment was carried out in Tailândia, in the state of Pará (Brazil), using a completely randomized experimental design, with four replications and seven treatments (ages of oil palm plants: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 years). The concentration, accumulation, cycling, immobilization, export, and efficiency of copper use in the different organs of the plants were evaluated. The highest copper concentrations occurred in the palm heart in the second year, and copper accumulation (481 g ha−1) and export were highest in the eighth year of growth. Among the plant organs, the highest copper exports occurred in the bunches (69.38 g ha1). The highest proportion of copper was immobilized (326 g ha−1), while the lowest proportion of the nutrient accumulated in the export organs. Copper use efficiency increased with plant age, and efficiency was greater in the petiole and lower in the palm heart. Background: Early initiation of breastfeeding (EIBF) is a starting point that lays the foundation for breastfeeding and bonding between mother and baby. Meanwhile, working mothers are one of the vulnerable groups for the success of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). The study analyzed the role of EIBF on EBF among Indonesian working mothers. Methods: The cross-sectional study examined secondary data from the 2021 Indonesian National Nutritional Status Survey. The study analyzed 4,003 respondents. We examined EBF practice as an outcome variable and EIBF as an exposure variable. We included nine control variables (residence, maternal age, marital, education, prenatal classes, wealth, infant age, sex, and birth weight). All variables were assessed by questionnaire. The study employed a binary logistic regression test in the last stage. Results: The result showed that the proportion of EBF among working mothers in Indonesia in 2021 was 51.9%. Based on EIBF, Indonesian working mothers with EIBF were 2.053 times more likely than those without to perform EBF (p < 0.001; AOR 2.053; 95% CI 2.028–2.077). Moreover, the study also found control variables related to EBF in Indonesia: residence, maternal age, marital, education, prenatal classes, wealth, infant age, sex, and birth weight. Conclusion: The study concluded that EIBF was related to EBF. Indonesian working mothers with EIBF were two times more likely than those without to perform EBF. Children living in poverty often are exposed to situations that negatively affect various aspects of their development. So, it is important to propose interventional programs that minimize the negative effects of living in poverty on these children. To verify the impact of a mastery climate cognitive-motor skills school-based intervention on academic and motor performance, body mass index, and perceptions of competence and self-worth in children living in poverty. Method: 280 children (50% girls), 7- to10-years-old, from Ceará state – Brazil, participated in this study. Intervention (IG, N = 140) and comparison (N = 140) groups were composed. The Test of Gross Motor Development – 2, the Self-Perception Profile for Children, the School Performance Test (reading, writing, math), and the Body Mass Index (BMI) were used. Children in the IG participated in a mastery climate intervention and children in the CG in a recreational sports program for 12 weeks (36 sessions /140 min each session/ three times a week) with 60 min of academic activities, 20 min recess and snacks, and 60 min of motor practices. The intervention group showed significant improvement from pre- to post-test, and higher motor, academic (reading, math), perceived competence, social acceptance, and self-worth scores than the comparison group at pos-test (p from 0.031 to <0.001). Mastery climate cognitive-motor intervention positively impacts the motor and academic performance and the self-perceptions of the children living in poverty, reinforcing the need for these interventions to helping children become more proficient and assured about their competences. Background: Standardised terminologies and classification systems play an increasingly important role in the continuous work towards high quality patient care. Currently, a standardised terminology for nutrition care, the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) Terminology (NCPT), is being implemented across the world, with terms for four steps: Nutrition Assessment (NA), Nutrition Diagnosis (ND), Nutrition Intervention (NI) and Nutrition Monitoring and Evaluation (NME). Objective: To explore associations between individual and contextual factors and implementation of a standardised NCPT among Swedish dietitians. Method: A survey was completed by 226 dietitians, focussing on: (a) NCPT implementation level; (b) individual factors; and (c) contextual factors. Associations between these factors were explored through a two-block logistic regression analysis. Results: Contextual factors such as intention from management to implement the NCPT (OR (odds ratio) ND 15.0, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 3.9–57.4, NME 3.7, 95% CI 1.1–13.0) and electronic health record (EHR) headings from the NCPT (OR NI 3.6, 95% CI 1.4–10.7, NME 3.8, 95% CI 1.1–11.5) were associated with higher implementation. A positive attitude towards the NCPT (model 1 OR ND 3.8, 95% CI 1.5–9.8, model 2 OR ND 5.0, 95% CI 1.4–17.8) was also associated with higher implementation, while other individual factors showed less association. Conclusion: Contextual factors such as intention from management, EHR structure, and pre-defined terms and headings are key to implementation of a standardised terminology for nutrition and dietetic care. The aim of the study was to investigate the iodine intake in the resident population in Xi'an and analyze the relationship between iodine nutritional status and the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism and thyroid nodules (TNs). A total of 2507 people were enrolled in Xi'an. Venous serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb), urinary iodine concentration (UIC), and thyroid ultrasonography were collected. Patients with abnormal TSH were checked for free thyroxine (FT4) and triiodothyronine (FT3). Adults in Xi'an had median UICs of 220.80 μg/L and 178.56 μg/l, respectively. A sum of 16.78% of people had subclinical hypothyroidism. Both iodine excess and iodine deficit increased the frequency of subclinical hypothyroidism. The lowest was around 15.09% in females with urine iodine levels between 200 and 299 μg/l. With a rate of 10.69%, the lowest prevalence range for males was 100–199 μg/l. In Xi'an, 11.37% of people have TNs. In comparison to other UIC categories, TN occurrences were higher in females (18.5%) and males (12%) when UIC were below 100 μg/l. In conclusion, iodine intake was sufficient in the Xi'an area, while the adults' UIC remains slightly higher than the criteria. Malnutrition is prevalent among surgical candidates and associated with adverse outcomes. Despite being potentially modifiable, malnutrition risk screening is not a standard preoperative practice. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to understand healthcare professionals' (HCPs) opinions and barriers regarding screening and treatment of malnutrition. HCPs working with adult surgical patients in Canada were invited to complete an online survey. Barriers to preoperative malnutrition screening were assessed using the Capability Opportunity Motivation-Behaviour model. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data were analyzed using summative content analysis. Of the 225 HCPs surveyed (n = 111 dietitians, n = 72 physicians, n = 42 allied HCPs), 96%–100% agreed that preoperative malnutrition is a modifiable risk factor associated with worse surgical outcomes and is a treatment priority. Yet, 65% (n = 142/220; dietitians: 88% vs. physicians: 40%) reported screening for malnutrition, which mostly occured in the postoperative period (n = 117) by dietitians (n = 94). Just 42% (48/113) of non-dietitian respondents referred positively screened patients to a dietitian for further assessment and treatment. The most prevalent barriers for malnutrition screening were related to opportunity, including availability of resources (57%, n = 121/212), time (40%, n = 84/212) and support from others (38%, n = 80/212). In conclusion, there is a gap between opinion and practice among surgical HCPs pertaining to malnutrition. Although disease-associated undernutrition is still an important problem in hospitalized children that is often underrecognized, follow-up studies evaluating post-discharge nutritional status of children with undernutrition are lacking. The aim of this multicentre prospective observational cohort study was to assess the rate of acute undernutrition (AU) and/or having a high nutritional risk (HR) in children on admission to seven secondary-care level Dutch hospitals and to evaluate the nutritional course of AU/HR group during admission and post-discharge. STRONGkids was used to indicate HR, and AU was based on anthropometric data (z-score < −2 for weight-for-age (WFA; <1 year) or weight-for-height (WFH; ≥1 year)). In total, 1985 patients were screened for AU/HR over a 12-month period. On admission, AU was present in 9.9% of screened children and 6.2% were classified as HR; 266 (13.4%) children comprised the AU/HR group (median age 2.4 years, median length of stay 3 days). In this group, further nutritional assessment by a dietitian during hospitalization occurred in 44% of children, whereas 38% received nutritional support. At follow-up 4–8 weeks post-discharge, 101 out of orginal 266 children in the AU/HR group (38%) had available paired anthropometric measurements to re-assess nutrition status. Significant improvement of WFA/WFH compared to admission (−2.48 vs. −1.51 SD; p < 0.001) and significant decline in AU rate from admission to outpatient follow-up (69.3% vs. 35.6%; p < 0.001) were shown. In conclusion, post-discharge nutritional status of children with undernutrition and/or high nutritional risk on admission to secondary-care level pediatric wards showed significant improvement, but about one-third remained undernourished. One in three hospitalized children have disease-related malnutrition (DRM) upon admission to hospital, and all children are at risk for further nutritional deterioration during hospital stay; however, systematic approaches to detect DRM in Canada are lacking. To standardise and improve hospital care, the multidisciplinary pediatric working group of the Canadian Malnutrition Taskforce aimed to develop a pediatric, inpatient nutritional care pathway based on available evidence, feasibility of resources, and expert consensus. The working group (n = 13) undertook a total of four meetings: an in-person meeting to draft the pathway based on existing literature and modelled after the Integrated Nutrition Pathway for Acute Care (INPAC) in adults, followed by three online surveys and three rounds of online Delphi consensus meetings to achieve agreement on the draft pathway. In the first Delphi survey, 32 questions were asked, whereas in the second and third rounds 27 and 8 questions were asked, respectively. Consensus was defined as any question/issue in which at least 80% agreed. The modified Delphi process allowed the development of an evidence-informed, consensus-based pathway for inpatients, the Pediatric Integrated Nutrition Pathway for Acute Care (P-INPAC). It includes screening <24 h of admission, assessment with use of Subjective Global Nutritional Assessment (SGNA) <48 h of admission, as well as prevention, and treatment of DRM divided into standard, advanced, and specialized nutrition care plans. Background: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is an idiopathic chronic disease characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, hyperalgesia, and allodynia that has been recently associated with risk of dysphagia. Objective: We aimed to analyze the association between nutritional status, micro- and macronutrient intake, and quality of life (QoL) in a cohort of women with FMS and risk of dysphagia compared to women with FMS without risk of dysphagia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 46 women with FMS. Risk of dysphagia was assessed by the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) and the Volume–Viscosity Swallow Test (V-VST). The Food Frequency Questionnaire and the Swallowing Quality of Life Questionnaire were used to assess dietary intake and QoL, respectively. Results: Thirty women with FMS were at risk for dysphagia (65.21%), assessed by the EAT-10. Based on the V-VST, the frequency of risk of dysphagia was 63.04%. Significant differences in body mass index (BMI) were found between women at risk for dysphagia and those without risk. Women at risk for dysphagia had significantly lower overall QoL scores than those women without risk. No significant differences were found for dietary intake and dysphagia risk. Discussion: Women with FMS at risk for dysphagia have significantly lower BMI values and worse QoL than women without dysphagia risk, supporting the importance of assessing dysphagia in clinical practice in persons with FMS.
